Stand Out
My Pops and my inspiration, Jack Hayes, passed away a few weeks ago. He was 94. Everyone who knew him loved him and is missing him, but he would be the first to tell you that he had an amazing life!
One of my favorite memories of Pops happened during a softball game at a father/son picnic. I was probably 8 or 9. He was up to bat with the bases empty. He hit a solid line drive into the outfield, watched it for a minute, then started running -- to third base. He ran all the way around the bases in the wrong direction, laughing and goofing the whole time. The other Dads were yelling "you're running the wrong way Jack!" and everyone was freaking out so badly that no one thought to tag him out. When he touched home he shouted "that's a home run!" Some Dads got mad, some thought it was funny, and the boys all thought he was an idiot. My friends asked me why he did it but I was just as stunned as they were. Afterwards I was soooo mad at him. Now of course I think its super funny.
Pops showed me every day that accepting what life dishes up as an invitation and an opportunity is a ticket to a happier and more abundant life. So run the bases in the opposite direction, do a silly dance, and celebrate living – its good for you!
